Die Beziehung der Freimaurerei zum europäischen Faschismus war in der masonischen Forschung lange Zeit weitgehend tabu. Erst in jüngster Zeit ist diese brisante Problematik in den Mittelpunkt der Forschung gerückt. Die Beiträge in diesem Band befassen sich mit dem komplexen Verhältnis der Freimaurerei zum europäischen Faschismus sowie zu seinen einzelnen Ausprägungen im deutschen Nationalsozialismus, Austrofaschismus, im italienischen Faschismus, in der französischen "Action française" und im Franco-Regime in Spanien. Faschismus wird dabei als europäisches Gesamtphänomen gesehen, obwohl es natürlich mehrere faschistische Bewegungen in Europa gegeben hat, die sich zum Teil ergänzten, aber auch in einzelnen Bereichen durchaus unterschiedliche Erscheinungsformen aufwiesen. Der Band leistet einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Aufarbeitung eines wichtigen Kapitels der jüngeren Geschichte der Freimaurerei und füllt eine zentrale Lücke in der masonischen Forschung.
