Von den konservativ reaktionären Teilen des Schweizer Bürgertums wurde der MARXIST UND KOMMUNIST zeitlebens diffamiert, isoliert, verfolgt und permanent überwacht. Ferngehalten von jeder angemessenen Anstellung und bis zu seinem Lebensende in prekären finanziellen Verhältnissen lebend, blieb Farner dennoch in der Schweiz, ließ sich jedoch weder kaufen noch arrangierte er sich.Seine vielseitigen Texte orientieren sich an der VERWIRKLICHUNG DES REALEN HUMANISMUS, sind zumeist als Essays geschrieben und werden in diesem Buch in ausgewählten Passagen abgedruckt. Sie spiegeln SEIN HISTORISCH-MATERIALISTISCHES DENKEN IM WELTHISTORISCHEN KONTEXT wider. Briefwechsel mit Fritz Cremer, Stephan Hermlin, Walter Hollitscher, Peter Huchel, Georg Lukács, Josef Hromádka oder Max Frisch und Hans Erni verdeutlichen seinen Austausch mit Mitstreitern.
