Heftigste Ablehnung ebenso wie höchste Wertschätzung, nicht selten überzuckert mit einer schneeweißen Haube Nostalgie. Je mehr sich die Jahrestage ihres Untergangs der magischen Zahl 100 nähern, umso stärker wird "Kakanien", wie Robert Musil die k.u.k. Monarchie ironisch bezeichnete, erneut zu einem Gegenstand der Reflexion: 1914 starb der österreichische Thronfolger Franz Ferdinand bei einem Attentat in Sarajevo, 1918 endete der Erste Weltkrieg mit dem Zerfall der Monarchie. In welchen Kontexten wird die kakanische Lebenswelt heute gesehen, mit welchen Erinnerungen und Überlegungen verbinden Intellektuelle wie Karl-Markus Gauß aus Salzburg, Dževad Karahasan aus Sarajevo oder György Konrád aus Budapest ihren Blick auf die mitteleuropäische Geschichte der vergangenen 100 Jahre? Diesen Fragen gehen die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes nach, dem eine Vortragsreihe des Münchner Adalbert-Stifter-Vereins zugrunde liegt.
