In seinen Memoiren schildert er u. a. die tragische Zerrissenheit der Südtiroler Bevölkerung in den Jahren der Option, als es galt, sich im Kreuzfeuer massiver Drohungen und raffinierter Propaganda für ein Verbleiben im faschistischen Italien oder eine Aussiedlung ins nationalsozialistische Deutschland zu entscheiden, seine Haft in Dachau, das vergebliche Bemühen um einen Wiederanschluss an Österreich nach 1945 und das Ringen um eine Autonomie."Mit Südtirol am Scheideweg", 1984 erstmals erschienen, stieß auf große Resonanz, erlebte mehrere Auflagen und auch eine Übersetzung ins Italienische. Seit Jahren vergriffen, wird es anlässlich des 100. Geburtstages von Friedl Volgger am 4. September 2014 neu aufgelegt, ergänzt mit seinen Briefen aus Dachau und Beiträgen seiner drei Kinder sowie von Journalisten und Historikern.
