Das Werk markiert den Beginn der Geschichte der modernen deutschen Reiseliteratur und ßbte starken Einfluss auf Alexander von Humboldt aus, der Forster als sein Vorbild bezeichnete und ihn auf mehreren Reisen begleitete, prägte aber auch viele Ethnologen späterer Zeiten.
