Das gilt auch heute; doch ist dem Gottesdienst vielfältige Konkurrenz zugewachsen. Der Hunger nach ritueller Erfahrung wird durch andere Sinnanbieter bedient. Wie kann Kirche da noch mithalten? Soll sie "mit der Zeit gehen" oder dem Zeitgeist widerstehen? Die Bemühung um eine angemessene Feier des Gottesdienstes muss im Zentrum der akademischen Theologie wie auch der Seelsorge der Kirche stehen. Denn die Liturgie bleibt auch im 21. Jahrhundert "Höhepunkt und Quelle" aller Lebensvollzüge der Kirche (SC 10), der Ort, an dem sich die Gemeinschaft der Glaubenden als pilgerndes Gottesvolk erfährt.
