Werden sie dabei als aktiv handelnde Subjekte dargestellt oder als passive Figuren in den literarischen Hintergrund verbannt? Um zu verstehen, was die Überlieferungen dazu mitteilen, berücksichtigt die Autorin den komplexen Entstehungs- und Überlieferungsprozess des Quellenmaterials sowie den Einfluss des soziokulturellen Umfeldes auf dessen Gestaltung.
