Nach der Gründung vor Akkon 1190 und der Erhebung zum Ritterorden 1198 breitete sich der Deutsche Orden rasch aus, erwarb Ländereien, Burgen und Herrschaften im Heiligen Land, in den Reichen am Mittelmeer, in Deutschland und vor allem in Preußen und Livland. In den baltischen Ländern baute er viel beachtete Herrschaften auf. Schon im späten Mittelalter wandelte er sich von einem religiös geprägten Orden zu einer Adelskorporation, um sich nach dem Ende des Alten Reiches zu einer vorrangig karitativ arbeitenden Institution zu entwickeln.
