Karitatives Tun ist für das theologische Selbstverständnis und das christliche Leben bis heute grundlegend. Im späten 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhundert stellten das sich drastisch verschärfende Pauperismusproblem sowie der Wegfall traditioneller katholischer Armenfürsorgeeinrichtungen durch die Säkularisation eine Herausforderung an die kirchliche Armenfürsorge und ihre Deutungsmuster dar. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird untersucht, welches Armutsverständnis in katholischen Predigten und Hirtenbriefen dieser Zeit vorherrscht und welche Konzepte von Armenfürsorge damit verbunden sind. Im Hintergrund der Studie steht die Frage, wie die diskursive Auseinandersetzung um die Themenfelder Armut und Armenfürsorge dazu beitrug, eine katholische Identität zu konstruieren.
