Abschied ist ein selbstverständliches Element und Thema menschlicher Existenz. Ist der vom Evangelisten Johannes beschriebene Abschied ebenfalls ein ganz und gar menschlicher Abschied? Wer ist dieser Sich-Verabschiedende überhaupt, von dem es heißt, er habe die Seinen bis ans Ende geliebt (13, 1), und was bedeutet dies alles für die Zurückbleibenden?Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht diese und ähnliche Fragen auf der Basis einer synchronen Lektüre bzw. literarisch-rhetorischen Analyse des Textes von Joh 13-17 zu beantworten. Die eruierte chiastische und konzentrische Struktur von Joh 13-17 (mit dem Zentrum 15, 1-17) wird sodann inhaltlich wie auch hinsichtlich der narrativen Leserlenkung des Evangeliums interpretiert und kommentiert.Das "Annehmen" und "Bleiben" der Jünger in Jesus, was missionarischen Ertrag ermöglicht, wird so zur zentralen Aussage der Abschiedsreden.
