Die Wahrscheinlichkeit dafür, durch einen terroristischen Anschlag zu sterben ist etwa so hoch wie die, vom Blitz getroffen zu werden, 800mal geringer als einen tödlichen Verkehrsunfall zu erleiden und 4000mal geringer als an Grippe zu sterben (wer hat schon Angst vor Grippe?). Die Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung liefert die Grundlagen für die eigentlichen Schätz- und Testverfahren, die Hauptgegenstand der schließenden (induktiven oder analytischen) Statistik sind. Diese vermittelt Methoden und Verfahren, um von Daten einer Stichprobe (Teilnehmer der Sonntagsfrage) auf qualitative und quantitative Eigenschaften einer Grundgesamtheit (alle Wähler) zu schließen. Wie im 1. Band zur beschreibenden Statistik ist die Darstellung auf das Verständnis des Stoffes ausgerichtet und verzichtet weitestgehend auf Formeln und den Einsatz des Taschenrechners; stattdessen werden die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der schließenden Statistik anhand einfacher Beispiele aus dem realen Leben dargestellt.
