Die Charakterisierung der staufischen Herrschaft schwankt seitdem zwischen machtbesessener Tyrannei, illusionärem Herrschaftsanspruch, Beharren auf überkommenen Reichsrechten und schöpferischer Staatskunst.Der Autor verfolgt einerseits die Ausformung frühstaatlicher Grundsätze und ihre Durchsetzung, schildert andererseits die Politik der Staufer aber auch als ein Mit- und Gegeneinander von führenden Adelsgeschlechtern.Gleichzeitig mit ihrem Aufstieg aus einer noch wenig profilierten Adelsfamilie zu einem Adelshaus mit unverwechselbarem Eigenverständnis und ganz bestimmten Mängeln ihrer Machtgrundlage wuchsen sie in die hohe Politik hinein, um am Ende eine ungeahnte, ins Eschatologische gesteigerte Entfaltung des eigenen Ansehens zu erreichen und ebenso maßlos bekämpft zu werden. Aus dieser Perspektive gelingt es dem Autor, das Spezifische der staufischen Geschichte herauszuschälen.
