La probabilità si basa sul concetto di associare ad un evento un numero che rappresenta il grado di fiducia sul suo verificarsi o meno. Intuitivamente siamo portati a dire che la probabilità, ad esempio, che esca testa da un lancio di una moneta a due facce non truccata sia del 50%. Questo è legato al fatto che ci sono due possibili esiti, testa o croce, che hanno pari possibilità di uscita. La probabilità in questo caso è esattamente il rapporto tra il numerodi casi favorevoli, uno, e quelli possibili, due, ottenendo 1/2 = 0.5cioè, in percentuale, il 50%.La probabilità è di grandissima utilità in molte situazioni e viene largamente usata praticamente in tutte le discipline scientifiche. Troviamo il concetto di probabilità, ad esempio, nel significato fisico del modulo quadro della funzione d'onda di una particella in meccanica quantistica oppure nel significato delle ampiezze di decadimento di alcune particelle instabili in fisica teorica delle particelle. In realtà la probabilità viene usata anche in casi di normale quotidianità, può essere ad esempio d'aiuto per una decisione, come nella scelta di percorrere una strada piuttosto che un'altra o nella scelta di adottare determinati comportamenti in determinate situazioni.
