A tal fine sono state esaminate le opere di alcuni dei maggiori esponenti, i legami con la tradizione precedente e successiva, le connessioni con la riflessione straniera e il più vasto scenario del dibattito italiano. In particolare è stata esplorata la produzione e la proposta pedagogica degli studiosi attivi durante l'età del Positivismo: Giuseppe Allievo, Francesco Paoli, Carlo Uttini, Augusto Conti e Augusto Alfani, nonché l'influenza esercitata in Italia da autori francesi come Félix Dupanloup, Jean Guibert e Martin Stanislao Gillet. Il saggio è concluso da un sondaggio sul filone della pubblicistica cosiddetta "minore", ovvero su alcuni "plutarchi" tradotti dal francese per le giovani italiane.
