Parallelamente alla sorte della protagonista, si snoda il sofferto percorso di instaurazione della prima Repubblica, afflitta da sospetti tradimenti e viltà che scatenano la spietata repressione giacobina, un evento di cui il romanzo offre una vibrante testimonianza per voce dei suoi personaggi. Giunta ormai alla fine della sua parabola letteraria improntata a un convinto impegno umanitario, George Sand non smette di sperare, nel travagliato Ottocento ancora segnato da profondi divari sociali e moti rivoluzionari, in un mondo finalmente giusto e fraterno, ispirato agli ideali del 1789 e dove soprusi e violenze non trovino più cittadinanza.
