Questo saggio è la ricognizione critica delle tappe dell'affascinante itinerario di un'opera, Salomé, che è l'estrema testimonianza del decadentismo fin de siècle. Il testo, scritto originariamente in francese da Oscar Wilde, è un complesso mosaico di reminiscenze letterarie e artistiche che felicemente si intersecano e, passando attraverso la sua versione in inglese, ispira un'eccezionale serie di raffinate illustrazioni di Aubrey Beardsley. Queste non sono una semplice traduzione, ma una interpretazione, fedele ed infedele al medesimo tempo, sempre originale ed elegante, della tragedia, che approda infine, grazie alla pregevole traduzione tedesca di Hedwig Lachmann, al capolavoro musicale di Richard Strauss. Cifra comune formale a ciascuna di queste tre versioni è la magica figura della ridondanza iterativa ternaria. Giuseppe Galigani, già Ordinario di Lingua e Letteratura Inglese nell'Università di Firenze, si è occupato prevalentemente di poesia, da Spenser fino a Dylan Thomas, e del rapporto tra letteratura e le arti (pittura, musica, giardinaggio, ebanisteria). Fra i suoi studi in volume si possono ricordare: Il "Rape of the Lock" di Pope; Il labirinto della mente; Tra poesia e pittura; Il 'Manfred' (CDROM) e Quel Sir John Falstaff, buffo e arguto.
