Questo libro vuole offrire un approccio singolare e un'opportunità di avvicinamento alle tribù germaniche dell'Europa centro-settentrionale nei più antichi contatti con l'antichità classica e con il Cristianesimo delle origini. Esso riunisce le testimonianze linguistiche che, in termini cronologici, vanno dai tempi anteriori a Cesare fino a circa il 900 d.C. e, in termini geografici, dall'Irlanda alla Crimea e alla Spagna visigotica fino al Baltico orientale, per far luce su aspetti importanti della cultura germanica e per mostrare quanto questa sia stata influenzata dal contatto con il mondo esterno, in gran parte ma non esclusivamente latino.
Il volume dimostra quanto gli studi sull'interferenza linguistica, spesso guardati con timore dai non specialisti, possano costituire parte di un puzzle affascinante e offrire importanti indizi per gli storici e per gli archeologi che si occupano di questo periodo.
