Questo il metodo – tanto ovvio, in apparenza – che ha orientato l'autore di questi studi nell'analisi della letteratura simbolista-decadente. Non si è scelto a caso di unire con un trattino due designazioni su cui molto è stato scritto: la distinzione tra Simbolismo e Decadentismo ci riporta infatti alla distinzione tra farce e sotie stabilita da taluni critici della letteratura del XV secolo. La domanda che Cigada pone, nel 1972, è ancora la stessa, nonostante la distanza temporale e la diversa natura dei generi in questione: generi e definizioni esistono solo se ancorati nei testi, e nell'Introduzione all'edizione delle Déliquescences.
