Nella vulgata tradizionale, Machiavelli è l'autore semi-leggendario che per primo ha affrancato la sfera politica dalle rigide regole della religione, della morale e del diritto, aprendo così la via a una teoria del potere inteso come pura volontà di potenza. In questo modo, il segretario fiorentino viene solitamente indicato come il capostipite della letteratura sulla cosiddetta "ragion di Stato". Ebbene, Machiavellismo e ragion di Stato, ormai già un classico negli studi sull'argomento, si incarica precisamente di rovesciare questo luogo comune: da una parte, contrapponendo il paradigma "guerriero" del discorso del machiavellismo a quello "economico" dei teorici della ragion di Stato; dall'altra, mostrando come quest'ultimo affondi le sue radici nel concetto di ratio status medievale – un concetto che dunque precede di molto l'opera di Machiavelli.
