Trama
Lousiana 2012. Gli ex detective Rusty Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) e Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) vengono ascoltati dalla polizia statale riguardo una loro indagine del 1995. Partner solo da pochi mesi, ai due viene assegnato l’omicidio di Dora Lange, una giovane prostituta trovata in ginocchio, con in testa una corona di corna di cervo, al centro di quella che sembra la scenografia di un rito esoterico. L’audizione permette ai due ex poliziotti di ripercorrere le tappe difficili del loro rapporto lavorativo. Marty, infatti, è un padre di famiglia, benvoluto dai colleghi, mentre Rust nasconde sotto atteggiamenti distaccati e respingenti il dolore per la morte di una figlia. Nonostante le resistenze dei superiori, interessati ad assegnare tutte le indagini a una task force contro le attività anti-cristiane voluta dal potente reverendo Tuttle, Cohle e Hart collegano l’omicidio della ragazza con il caso di Marie Fontenot, una bambina scomparsa anni prima, le cui ricerche sono state subito interrotte. Proprio a casa degli zii della Fontenot, i detective ritrovano alcuni manufatti simili a quelli della scena del ritrovamento della Lange, confermando i loro sospetti di avere a che fare con un assassinio seriale. I dettagli di questo caso suscitano grande interesse da parte dell’attuale polizia, convinta di aver trovato, in un macabro delitto appena avvenuto, delle strane somiglianze con il serial killer cercato da Cohle e Hart.
