La rappresentazione dell'eros in letteratura, e in particolare nel romanzo, genere piĂč di altri legato a una storia e alle parole che la raccontano, Ăš sempre giocata sull'allusione, e sulla dialettica tra il dire e il non dire, il mostrare e il nascondere; tra una «scena» dunque in cui l'eros si fa presenza, gesto e parola sconnessa che eccede i limiti del linguaggio, e il linguaggio stesso che ne consente l'accesso alla coscienza attraverso le sue strategie di contenimento, censura, rimozione.
Il volume ripercorre in questa chiave le rappresentazioni della «scena erotica» dalle soglie della modernità fino al Novecento: esplosioni gioiose e vitali di alcuni testi cinque/secenteschi, esibizioni licenziose e martoriate dei romanzi libertini francesi e di Sade, dolorosi intrecci tra eros matrimonio e adulterio nel romanzo borghese dell'Ottocento e infine la presunta e problematica liberazione della pulsione erotica nel romanzo novecentesco e nelle sue sperimentazioni: coperture e aggiramenti sempre nuovi e diversi di una materia che continua a eludere la rappresentazione. Giovanna Mochi ha insegnato Letteratura inglese nelle università di Udine e di Siena. Ha lavorato sul romanzo angloamericano tra Otto e Novecento (Henry James in particolare), il Romanticismo inglese e la drammaturgia shakespeariana. Dirige la collana di classici inglesi "Elsinore" della Letteratura Universale Marsilio.
