Frutto della sintesi di diversi paratesti preesistenti, la Prefazione rappresenta uno dei primi documenti in francese che analizzino in modo dettagliato l'opera di Shakespeare, cui riserva un trattamento comparabile a quello dei grandi classici nazionali. Il testo è anche il primo in cui compaia la parola «romantique», sebbene inserita nel contesto di una sensibilità ancora tutta settecentesca. Riveduta e ricomposta, la descrizione della drammaturgia shakespeariana diviene qui una summa delle teorie drammatiche riformiste. Vincenzo De Santis è ricercatore in Letteratura Francese all'Università degli Studi di Salerno. Si è formato presso la Sapienza, l'Università di Milano, Paris-Sorbonne e l'Università di Warwick.
