Averroé protagonista del romanzo è un ragazzo Down che, per ironia del caso, porta il nome di un grande filosofo arabo-spagnolo vissuto nell'anno mille. Averroé a causa della propria diversità sia fisica sia intellettiva che lo allontana da qualsiasi rapporto con il suo prossimo anche nell'ambito familiare, vive una vita solitaria fatta di sogni confusi e di lunghe peregrinazioni che spesso lo portano lontano da casa dove solamente la madre lo attende con amore infinito. Ciò avviene ogni giorno dall'alba al tramonto. Ma una sera Averroé non rientra e, perso nei propri sogni, raggiunge la vicina città dove, tra varie vicissitudini, incontra un immigrato di colore con il quale stabilisce una solida e tenera amicizia che sembra donargli una quasi normalità tra esseri umani che, come lui sono rifiutati dalla società così detta civile. Solamente la madre, spinta dall'amore per quel figlio così diverso da tutti, lascerà casa, marito e figli per andarlo a cercare nella città che, alla sua ignoranza, appare tentacolare e pericolosa.
