A legarli e contrapporli è questa volta la difesa, da una parte, e la sete di possesso, dall'altra, del leggendario tesoro dei Ventimiglia. Ma è ancora la storia di un'epoca tormentata e violenta, quella della Sicilia del XIV secolo, la vera protagonista della narrazione. Una storia che, come fa spesso intravedere l'autore, è la cieca e spietata artefice delle umane vicende, chiacciate e travolte inesorabilmente dal suo corso ineluttabile. NOTE
Nato a Palermo nel 1857, Luigi Natoli a diciasette anni iniziò a collaborare con il Giornale di Sicilia. La precoce vocazione letteraria fu consacrata dalla pubblicazione del romanzo I Beati Paoli, oggi riconosciuto come il suo capolavoro. Ma la sua produzione è vasta e spazia dalla narrativa, alla storia, alla poesia.
