Attraverso l'analisi critica delle cronache coeve e giovandosi dei più avanzati risultati della storiografia contemporanea, il volume ricostruisce la complessa personalità e l'opera di Ruggero II d'Altavilla (Mileto, 1095 - Palermo, 1154), fondatore e primo sovrano del Regno di Sicilia. Ne emerge il profilo di un sagace condottiero e grande stratega, ma soprattutto di un accorto diplomatico e di un monarca dai molteplici interessi culturali, le cui realizzazioni politiche, ambiziose ma coerenti, fanno intravedere incompiute aspirazioni imperiali mediterranee centrate sulla Sicilia. Il nuovo regno raggiunse comunque una tale potenza e fioritura artistica e culturale da suscitare o l'ammirazione sconsiderata o l'odio implacabile dei contemporanei. L'impegnativa eredità di Ruggero II sarebbe poi stata parzialmente raccolta e rielaborata da un'altra figura d'eccezione, il celebre nipote Federico II di Svevia. NOTE
