Collage

Contemporary Artists Hunt and Gather, Cut and Paste, Mash Up and Transform

About this book

Collage has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity during the twenty-first century, resulting in an explosion of creativity. This showcase of cutting-edge contemporary art from across the globe features galleries of collage by 30 practitioners, from the surreal landscapes of Beth Hoeckel to Fabien Souche's humorous appropriations of pop culture. Each artist has also created a new piece especially for this book—all using the same original image, but with results as wildly diverse as the medium of collage itself. This collection is visual inspiration for art lovers and an appreciation of the transformation of old into new.

LARISSA HAILY AGUADO

I started the project Life Is a Collage in 2008, mainly out of a need for expression and personal communication. With collage I found a method in which I felt free to present my findings, despite the physical limitations of this technique.
Paper, scalpel, and glue are my materials, and my tools. I seek, select, and classify images that I find interesting or attractive. I then combine them, transforming them into a new reality. The traditional handmade collage has its own identity and ethics, totally opposed to the infinite possibilities of digital, but this is where the true value is—the challenge of finding opportunities and achieving functionality within the constraints. I combine nature, people, and objects only in order to transmit more complex emotions, thoughts, and feelings.
Today this remains my most effective way to represent my visual thinking.

The subject of thread has been with me since college. I remember, I once connected the trees in a park to show the space between them. In a workshop exercise, I measured the facades of some buildings and then unrolled different dimensions of threads over me to demonstrate physically the relationship between the body and the scale of architecture.
When I intervene with threads on an image, I work on anot...
