ARENDELLE

Several stories have taken place in the Frozen world now. To make sure the geography made sense logically in Frozen 2, we tweaked the design of Arendelle kingdom in subtle ways for accuracy. It feels more like an old European town now, with its own history. The streets and houses have a more logical layout. It feels like a real, permanent place.

As we developed the village of Arendelle, we gave the streets names. Market Square is surrounded by the main streets of Klokkegate, which goes to the clock, and Hoydegate, which runs up a hill. Kongeligplas, or Royal Square, was so named because at one point there was going to be a royal statue there. Borgbro is the road that connects the main village to the castle. And Vindmolleveien is the windy road around the perimeter that has a windmill on it.

The technology has improved since Frozen. We tried to make sure the essence of the original filmā€”its look and feelā€”is retained, while also updating assets and elements where we can. For example, weā€™re using a different renderer, called Disneyā€™s Hyperion Renderer, which increases the ability to make things feel like the material they actually are and to depict fine details we werenā€™t able to show before. The film starts in Arendelle so audiences will see areas of the castle and village theyā€™ve seen before, but thereā€™s more of a visual richness.

There was a version of the story where Arendelle Castle was washed away in a flood, and then rebuilt as a combination of the Northuldra and Arendellian styles. The castleā€™s foundations became a series of islands linked with aerial bridges to various parts of the castle. Another version had the flow of water being reversed, which is why we designed the watermill.
