Wardway Ready-Cut Construction Saves One-Third to One-Half Carpenter Work
MACHINE labor replaces hand work in building Wardway Ready-Cut Homes. One man with the help of the wonderful electrically driven machines in the mill does the work of ten carpenters on the job. That in a nutshell is the secret of the savings of the Wardway system. It is the old story of quantity production by machine versus individual labor by hand.
Not only time is saved, but lumber. It has been calculated by experts that an average of 17 per cent of the lumber delivered to erect a house the old way was wasted. Short ends, mistakes, unusable lengths, cause a large addition to the cost. Through scientific cutting we have reduced this waste to less than two per cent. This saving alone covers the entire cost of cutting the material in the mill.
Wardway System Eliminates Mistakes
Study the illustration at the right. Note the great number of pieces necessary to build a houseâthe complicated angling cutsâand remember an average of three cuts are made in each piece of lumber that goes into a house to fit it into place. It means not only a huge amount of laborâvery expensive laborâif done by hand, but innumerable chances for costly mistakes. The Wardway Ready-Cut System of exact measurements and scientific cutting eliminates all chance for mistakes. Each piece is cut exactly according to the architectâs drawing, accurate to the sixteenth of an inch. Each piece is inspected by an expert and clearly marked with a printed stencil to correspond with the same piece shown on the plan. Your carpenter simply takes the piece the plan calls for, slips it into place and nails it up. It fits perfectlyâcannot help itâno chance for error.

The lumber as specified is furnished in standard mill-run lengths which must be cut to fit by the carpenter. No Hunting for Pieces
There is no confusion or hunting for pieces when building a Wardway Home. All small pieces are bundled and marked, such as framing for window and door openings, dormers, sheathing for gables, etc. All large pieces are plainly marked and all pieces which are duplicated (such as studs, joists, etc.) are marked alike and are interchangeable.
Certain materials for Wardway Homes are loaded by electrically driven trucks (in the foreground). These modern, efficient methods save you money.
When the car is ready for shipment the pieces to be used first are carefully loaded first, so that when the car is unloaded and piled they are on top. Complete instructions for piling are sent with the plans, as well as very thorough instructions covering every operation and every stage of construction, from digging the excavation to finishing the woodwork.

ALL dimension lumber throughout is of proper size for the purpose for which it is intended. The best engineering practice has been employed, and our long building experience insures that every piece of lumber in all the houses in this book is amply large to carry all loads placed upon it, and to withstand all strains and stresses.
Girders, Girder Posts and Bolsters are No. 1 Yellow Pine, cut-to-fit.
Girders, Box Sills, Wall Plates, Joists, Studding, Rafters, Blockings, Cripples, Lookouts and all Dimension Lumber are No. 1 Yellow Pine, surfaced and edged, cut-to-fit. Every piece bundled and marked wherever necessary for easy handling.
Scaffolding and Braces are furnished for two sides of the building; also roll of tar paper for covering lumber.
Bridging. A row of double 1 by 3-inch cross bridging is furnished on all joist spans 12 feet and over. Cut-to-fit.
Stair Horses for cellar, main and attic stairs and porch steps are cut-to-fit.
Sub-Flooring is furnished for the first floor of all houses and is 1 by 6-inch No. 2 Yellow Pine tongued and grooved boards, surfaced two sides, cut-to-fit.
Finish Flooring for first and second floors is 1 by 4-inch (3Âź-inch face) clear flat grain Yellow Pine. This flooring is clearâno knots or defects of any kind.
Lath for all inside walls and ceilings, No. 1 soft leaf Yellow Pine, guaranteed to make a first-class job. 85 per cent of these lath are 4 feet long, 15 per cent are 32 inches long. No lath furnished for cellar or attic.
Cellar, Grade and Attic Stairs. Treads, risers and strings cut to convenient length for fitting. See Page 11 for main stairs.
Grounds, ž by ž-inch Yellow Pine, furnished around all inside doors, and double course for all baseboards, as a guide for plaster.
Backing Strips, 1 by 6 and 1 by 3-inch Yellow Pine, furnished to make solid angles for plastering. Bundled and marked.
Roof Boards, 1 by 4-inch No. 2 Yellow Pine, surfaced two sides, cut-to-fit, bundled and marked and spaced about 2 inches apart. All angles for hips and valleys cut-to-fit.
Wall Sheathing, 1 by 8-inch No. 2 Yellow Pine shiplap, surfaced two sides, or 1 by 6-inch No. 2 Yellow Pine dressed and matched CUT-TO-FIT. Each section tied up in bundles, marked. Angles cut for gable sheathing.
Roof Shingles, extra clear 5 to 2 Washington Red Cedar, the best grade made. Wall shingles, where shown, are 6 to 2 Star, A Star Washington Red Cedar. All roof shingles laid 4½ inches to the weather.
Attic Flooring, No. 2 Yellow Pine, dressed and matched, for all houses having an attic stairway. CUT-TO-FIT and marked.
