INDEX

The sentences, words and phrases in this book are numbered consecutively from 1 to 2191. The entries in the index refer to those numbers. In addition, each major section heading (capitalized entries) is indexed according to page number. In cases where there may be confusion, parts of speech are indicated by the following abbreviations: adj. for adjective, adv. for adverb, aux. v. for auxiliary verb, n. for noun and v. for verb. (Rather than prepositions, Finnish often uses postpositions—abbreviated post — which follow a word instead of preceding it.) Parentheses are used for explanations, as they are in the body of the phrasebook.
Because of the already large extent of the indexed material, cross-indexing has generally been avoided. Phrases or groups of two or more words will usually be found under only one of their components, e.g., “ boarding house ” only under “ boarding,” though there is a separate entry for “house” alone. Every Finnish word or phrase in the index is followed by one or more English equivalents, which are ordinarily given in dictionary form: the nominative singular (sometimes plural) for nouns and adjectives and the first infinitive for verbs. Pronouns are used less often than in English; they are generally understood from the form of the verb or a noun suffix.
In effect, the reader is provided with an up-to-date English-Finnish glossary. Of course, a knowledge of Finnish grammar is necessary for making the best use of the index, especially since Finnish is a highly inflected language. To assist you in using the correct forms of words, the index lists all the sentences that include different forms of a word. Under “address,” for example, sentencesandare listed. They provide the forms osoite (nominative singular), osoitetta (the partitive case, singular) and osoitteeseen (the illative or “ into ” case, singular), respectively. Invariable forms are indexed only once, and only one appearance of each variation is listed, so that there are no duplicate listings. The beginner would do well to look at all the sentences listed for a Finnish word in order to become familiar with the range of variations, and at all the Finnish equivalents listed for an English word in order to become familiar with their different shades of me...
