Die Untersuchung interpretiert Max Webers Religionssoziologie vor dem Hintergrund seiner Theorie des Handlungsverstehens. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei die "Religiösen Gemeinschaften". Um die handlungs- und verstehenstheoretischen Grundlagen dieses unvollendet gebliebenen Werks bestimmen zu können, setzt sich das erste Kapitel mit Webers "Wissenschaftslehre" auseinander und rekonstruiert die darin entwickelten Begriffe des Handelns und der Deutung unter BerĂŒcksichtigung der zeitgenössischen Diskussionslage. Im zweiten Kapitel wird der Einfluss der Religionsforschung auf die Begriffsbildung der "Religiösen Gemeinschaften" spezifiziert, was zum einen das protestantische Erbe der Religionssoziologie Webers zutage fördert und zum anderen den religionswissenschaftlichen Anteil zentraler religionssoziologischer Begriffe insgesamt markiert. Diese werden dann im letzten Kapitel auf ihr idealtypisches GeprĂ€ge und ihre handlungstheoretischen Elemente hin analysiert. Auf diesem Wege gelingt es, den in werkbiographischer und systematischer Hinsicht ausgesprochen weitreichenden wechselseitigen BegrĂŒndungszusammenhang von Webers methodologischen und religionssoziologischen Schriften offen zu legen.
