Es bietet eine theoretische Grundlegung der sprachlichen Konstruktion und Konstitution von "Bildung" sowie eine Nachzeichnung der ideengeschichtlichen Rolle, die der Sprache in der Bildung zugewiesen wird. Für zentrale Bereiche der institutionellen Bildung (Wissenschaftsdisziplinen, Schulfächer) werden die Erzeugung, Vermittlung und Verfügung sowie die institutionelle Normierung von sprachlich repräsentiertem Bildungs-Wissen rekonstruiert. Das Handbuch nimmt eine interdisziplinäre Perspektive auf die Sprachlichkeit von Bildung als Prozess oder/und als Produkt ein und befasst sich über die theoretische Grundlegung hinaus mit Ansätzen zur Lösung unmittelbar praxisnaher Probleme, die u.a. aufgrund unterschiedlicher Versprachlichungsformen und Gegenstandskonstitutionen von Bildung erklärbar sind. Das Handbuch hat insgesamt zum Ziel, den Diskurs der Aushandlung und Konstitution von Bildungs-Wissen zu untersuchen, zu dokumentieren und kritisch zu hinterfragen (auch z.B. in Bezug auf Ausschluss, Dominanz, Kanonisierung von Wissen).
