Einleitende Überblickskommentare stellen Nietzsches Schriften in den konzeptionellen Zusammenhang, erläutern ihre Struktur und bieten Informationen zur Entstehungs- und Wirkungsgeschichte. Umfangreiche Stellenkommentare gehen auf einzelne Textpartien und ihre Quellen ein. So entsteht ein neuer Zugang zu Nietzsches Werken. Für die künftige Nietzsche-Forschung bildet dieser Kommentar eine unentbehrliche Grundlage.

Die Gliederung des Kommentars folgt der Kritischen Studienausgabe (KSA). Insgesamt sind sechs Bände vorgesehen, die in Teilbände untergliedert werden. Ein siebter Band soll Verzeichnisse und Register enthalten. Die Ausgabe wird 2023 abgeschlossen sein.
