Der Band schließt mit den letzten fünfzehn Manuskripten die Reihe der in der MEGA² erstmals veröffentlichten Texte zum "Kapital" ab. Dreizehn Entwürfe, Skizzen oder Quellenextrakte entstanden 1867/68; sieben betreffen das dritte, drei das zweite Buch. In drei Erörterungen – insbesondere im Manuskript "Über Mehrwert- und Profitrate, Gesetze der Profitrate, Kostpreis und Umschlag des Kapitals" – lotet Marx essentielle Interdependenzen beider Bücher aus. Spürbar ungeduldig sucht er, Band 1 einen stringenten Gesamtentwurf des zweiten Buches zur Seite zu stellen (siehe MEGA² II/11) und die im, Hauptmanuskript'‹ zum dritten Buch von 1864/65 offen gebliebenen Fragen definitiv aufzuarbeiten. Der Leser sieht Marx in einem umfassenden Kategorienklärungsprozess begriffen, u. a. wird er mit der Profitrate auf den Kostpreis (Pi) konfrontiert, verknüpft mit dem beharrlichen Versuch, Effizienzkriterien wie die Profitrate, mathematisch exakt' zu fassen.
