Der Band enthält Marx' ›Hauptmanuskript‹ zum dritten Buch des "Kapitals": "Die Gestaltungen des Gesamtprozesses", entstanden zwischen Sommer 1864 und Februar 1866 und bilden später die Grundlage der von Engels 1894 veröffentlichten Fassung des Dritten Bandes des "Kapital" (siehe MEGA² II/15). Gegliedert in sieben Kapitel, handelt es sich entgegen ursprünglicher Intentionen um eine voluminöse nochmalige Selbstverständi-gung über die Profitrate und ihre Bestimmungsfaktoren, die Bildung von Durchschnittsprofitrate und Produkti-onspreis, die Entwicklungstendenz der Profitrate, die Kapitalformen kommerzielles, zinstragendes und agrikultu-relles Kapital sowie deren Einkommen. Eine Reihe von Fragen bezeichnet Marx selbst als unbefriedigend gelöst, weitere – wie den Einfluss des Kapitalumschlags auf die Profitrate – stellt er zurück (siehe MEGA² II/4.3) und die unerlässliche durchgängige Aktualisierung von Illustrationsmaterialien leitet er noch 1865/66 mit Studien zur Differentialrente ein.
