Schon kurz nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges begann die Sowjetunion, sich um Einfluss in den Ländern der sogenannten Dritten Welt und solchermaßen um Positionsgewinne in ihrem politischen Ringen mit dem Westen und dessen Vormacht USA zu bemühen. Antikolonialistische und sowjetsozialistische Befreiungsrhetorik passten oft gut zusammen, aber der genauere Blick zeigt, dass die Beziehungen vielschichtiger und wesentlich vom Eigensinn der jungen, selbständig gewordenen Nationen geprägt waren. Indira Gandhi und Leonid Breschnew stehen gewissermaßen für dieses Gefüge. Mit dem Einmarsch in Afghanistan 1979 verspielte die UdSSR schließlich einen erheblichen Teil des erworbenen Vertrauenskapitals. Im vorliegenden Band führt ein internationales Autorenteam mit 14 Beiträgen zu Schlüsselproblemen in ein von der deutschen Zeitgeschichtsschreibung bislang wenig bearbeitetes, nichtsdestoweniger aber brisantes Forschungsfeld ein.
