Das Arbeitsheft, das sich primär an Studierende und Lehrende in den Studiengängen für Übersetzen und Dolmetschen sowie an interessierte RomanistInnen richtet, unterscheidet sich von anderen Einführungen und Lehrbüchern vor allem in den folgenden Punkten: Es ist sprachbezogen, ohne sich auf ein einziges Sprachenpaar zu beschränken, denn es bezieht sich auf drei romanische Sprachen (Französisch, Italienisch, Spanisch) sowie auf das Deutsche (als Vergleichsgrundlage). Und es konzentriert sich auf ausgewählte Grundlagen aus drei Themenbereichen: Das erste Kapitel ist den historischen Grundlagen gewidmet und bietet einen Abriss der Geschichte der Übersetzungstheorie und -praxis in Frankreich, Spanien und Italien. Kapitel 2 gilt den theoretischen Grundlagen der modernen Übersetzungs- und Dolmetschwissenschaft. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf französisch-, italienisch- und spanischsprachigen Autoren, welche in deutschsprachigen Einführungen ansonsten oft nur am Rande oder gar nicht behandelt werden. Das dritte Kapitel befasst sich mit Grundlagen der sprachenpaarbezogenen Übersetzungswissenschaft und zeigt anhand zahlreicher Beispiele sprachlich bedingte Probleme der romanisch-deutschen und innerromanischen Übersetzung auf. Alle Kapitel enthalten gezielte bibliographische Hinweise sowie Arbeitsaufgaben, die zu einer vertiefenden Beschäftigung mit der Materie anregen sollen.
