Der Münchener Rechtsanwalt Max Hirschberg ist von Anfang an Anhänger der Weimarer Republik. Rasch wird er zum gesuchten Strafverteidiger, besonders in politischen Fällen. Als Jude und Demokrat schon in den 20er Jahren geschmäht, zählt er bereits 1933 zu den Verfolgten des NS-Regimes. Der engagierte Sozialdemokrat und Hitlergegner ist 1933 der erste prominente "Schutzhäftling" in München. 1934 sieht er sich schließlich gezwungen, in einer dramatischen Flucht über Italien nach New York ins Exil zu gehen. Seine ausführlich eingeleiteten und kommentierten Erinnerungen sind ein bewegendes Zeitzeugnis. Das exemplarische Leben eines zu Unrecht vergessenen Demokraten und Hitlergegners bietet Anlass, darüber nachzudenken, welchen Aderlass die deutsche Kultur durch die Vertreibung und Ermordung der Juden erlitten hat.
