Solange die realistische Literatur als in sich geschlossen bewertet wird, ihr also Glaubwürdigkeit und konsistente Erzählhaltung zu unterstellen sind, ist eine Betonung hervorgehobener Artifizialität in einem qualitativ wertneutralen Sinne undenkbar. Lässt man jedoch die narrative Vermittlung des Geschehens zu ihrem Recht kommen, dann geben sich die entsprechenden Texte als, poietisch' zu erkennen: sie stellen keine literarische Wirklichkeit dar, sondern literarische Künstlichkeit. Darstellung in den Erzählungen des Realismus kennzeichnet sich entschieden als Ergebnis eines solchen, herstellenden Tuns' (gr. poiesis).
In der Untersuchung der kanonisierten Erzähltexte des Realismus zeigt sich, dass sich die als, Novelle' etikettierte Prosa durch eine ästhetische Qualität auszeichnet, die in der Literaturgeschichtsschreibung bislang nur beiläufig vermerkt worden ist: , Kunstfertigkeit' können die Texte insofern aufweisen, als sie literarische Fiktion als, gemacht' herausstellen. Formale Differenzierungen etwa von Rahmen und Schachtelrahmen sowie inhaltliche Differenzierungen in Erinnerungsnovelle, Chronik- und Briefnovelle weisen genauso wie Gewährspersonenhinweise und logische Unstimmigkeiten ein und dieselbe Ästhetisierungsstrategie auf: Es wird erzählt, dass erzählt wird.
Zumindest die Novelle des Realismus führt demnach das romantische Programm fort., Poesie der Poesie' wird als Richtlinie ernstgenommen und läuft den Bemühungen der Realisten um Wirklichkeitsabbildung zuwider.
