Die Baikal-Amur-Magistrale war das größte Prestigeprojekt der späten Sowjetunion. Begonnen hatte der Bau dieser sibirischen Eisenbahnstrecke in den Lagern der stalinistischen Gewaltherrschaft. Unter Brežnev wurde das Projekt dann als "Bauvorhaben des Jahrhunderts" aus der Versenkung geholt und mit großem Aufwand als Vorstoß in die sowjetische Moderne inszeniert. Was versprach man sich davon? Wie funktionierten Propaganda und Mobilisierung der Bauleute? Wie ging man mit den Ureinwohnern Sibiriens um und wie mit ökologischen Problemen? Diesen Fragen geht das Buch ebenso nach wie der Frage, wie die Menschen in den Lagern und später beim Bahnbau lebten, welche Erwartungen sie hegten und mit welchen Problemen sie zu kämpfen hatten. Die Geschichte der BAM ist ein Spiegel der russischen Geschichte im 20. Jahrhundert. Johannes Grützmachers Werk wurde mit dem Klaus-Mehnert-Preis zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses 2010 der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Osteuropakunde ausgezeichnet.
