Im Dritten Reich sahen sie sich mit einer Politisierung der Unterrichtsinhalte und zunehmenden Eingriffen in den Schulalltag konfrontiert. Nach 1945 kam es im östlichen Teil Deutschlands zu einer völligen Umgestaltung des höheren Schulwesens, mit der eine Neubestimmung der Lehrerrolle einherging.
