Die vorliegende empirische Untersuchung zu gesprochenen Regionalstandardvarietäten in Baden-Württemberg geht zunächst mit quantitativen Methoden der Variationslinguistik auf typische Abweichungen vom Normstandard in den untersuchten Daten ein. Es lassen sich vor allem zwei Gruppen von typischen Abweichungen erkennen: (a) Die Übernahme von regionalen (dialektalen) Merkmalen auch in Standardvarietäten (in Baden-Württemberg insbesondere alemannische Merkmale), (b) Der Gebrauch "allegrosprachlicher" Formen. Analysiert werden zunächst aktuelle Interviewdaten. In einem Vergleich mit Daten aus den Jahren 1961 und 1992 können Aussagen zu Sprachwandelprozessen gemacht werden. Der empirischen Untersuchung geht ein historischer Überblick über die Standardisierung des Deutschen voraus. Im Schlusskapitel werden die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung auf eine theoretische Modellierung im Rahmen der Optimalitätstheorie übertragen. Mittels "soziolinguistischer Beschränkungen" kann in dieser Modellierung Sprachwandel durch den Vergleich unterschiedlicher OT-Grammatiken abgebildet werden.
