Das »Althochdeutsche Wörterbuch« ist unentbehrliches Hilfsmittel für Studium und Forschung in der Germanistik und den älteren germanischen Sprachstufen überhaupt. Die jetzt notwendig gewordene 6. Auflage berücksichtigt die seit der 5. Auflage festgestellten Corrigenda und fügt dem Wortschatz eine Reihe von bisher nicht bemerkten kleineren Texten hinzu, deren Zahl jetzt bei 84 liegt. Das entscheidend Neue der 6. Auflage ist die Einbeziehung der Glossen. Mehr als 27.000 Wortartikel (aus über 250.000 Belegen in fast 1.300 Handschriften) ergänzen den Wortschatz der literarischen Denkmäler, der 12.000 Wortartikel umfasst. Die Glossen überlappen diesen Wortschatz und gehen vielfach darüber hinaus. Beide Bereiche sind in diesem Band zusammengefügt, indem die Glossenwörter durch eine Sigle repräsentiert werden: SchG.
