Der psychologische Roman Anton Reiser (1785–1790) ist das bis heute bekannteste Hauptwerk von Karl Philipp Moritz und ein Schlüsseltext der deutschen Aufklärung. Mit diesem Band wird das Werk zum ersten Mal vollständig (mit allen Varianten der Vor-, Parallel- und Doppeldrucke) kritisch ediert und seine Rezeptionsgeschichte reichhaltig dargestellt.

Ein ausführlicher Kommentar rekonstruiert die Entstehungsgeschichte des Romans im Zusammenhang von Moritz' spätaufklärerisch geprägten Berliner Publikationen seit 1780 und analysiert das neuartige, zwischen Autobiographie und Roman angesiedelte Konzept des Werks. Der Kommentar erhellt einerseits zugrundeliegende literarische Muster und psychologische Parallelen zu dem gleichzeitig von Moritz begründeten Magazin zur Erfahrungsseelenkunde; andererseits analysiert er die biographischen und realgeschichtlichen Bezüge des Werks. Dabei erlauben bisher unbekannte Dokumente zu Moritz' Kindheit aus dem deutschen Quietistenzirkel um Johann Friedrich von Fleischbein (1700–1774) erstmals eine nähere Analyse des Werks als autobiographisches Konstrukt.

Ein umfangreicher Stellenkommentar weist detailliert die Bezüge des psychologischen Romans zu Moritz' Leben und Lektüre sowie zur zeitgenössischen Lokal-, Schul- und Theatergeschichte nach; darüber hinaus erhellt er die zahlreichen Verbindungen des Werks zu Moritz' sprachwissenschaftlichen, pädagogischen, psychologischen und ästhetischen Interessen im Gesamtwerk.
