Diese Buch hat vier Schwerpunkte: 1. zeichnet es die historischen, sozialen und kulturellen Konfigurationen der Presse nach; 2. Begleitet es die kommunikativen Praktiken, Absichten und Strategien der Druckpresse; 3. rekonstruiert es die Situierung der Diskurstradition des Leitartikels im größeren Kontext der Zeitung; schließlich beschreibt es 4. Kontinuität und Wandel der Komposition des Editorials in sprachlicher und außersprachlicher Hinsicht. Das Buch leistet innerhalb einer allgemeineren Theorie der Kommunikation einen Beitrag zum Forschungsgebiet der Diskurstraditionen, das in Deutschland insbesondere in der Romanistik im Kontext der historischen Pragmatik entfaltet wurde. Die in sozialer Dimension entfaltete Geschichte des brasilianischen Portugiesisch verknüpft die Historizität der Sprache mit der der Diskurstraditionen und der der Gesellschaft. Die seit dem 19. Jahrhundert erschienen Leitartikel werden einer deskriptiven und interpretierenden Analyse unterzogen, die die strukturellen, sprachlichen und diskursiven Merkmale der Texte herausstellt. Der prozesshafte Charakter der Texte wird ebenso berücksichtigt wie der Gebrauch des brasilianischen Portugiesisch im 19. Jh., wobei der interdisziplinäre Fokus insbesondere auf der Entwicklung der Kommunikationskompetenz seitens der Autoren und Leser liegt.
