Die Überlieferung des Briefwechsels Gottscheds setzt mit dem Zeitpunkt seiner Übersiedlung nach Leipzig ein (1724). Längere Zeit bleiben die Verbindungen in die Heimat Ostpreußen, vor allem zu früheren Kommilitonen, eng und intensiv. Die Deutsche Gesellschaft in Leipzig, der Gottsched seit 1727 als Senior vorsteht, gewinnt zunehmend auswärtige Mitglieder. Deren Briefe bestimmen in einem wachsenden Maße den Inhalt der Korrespondenz. Wichtig ist schließlich der Beginn der Korrespondenz mit seiner späteren Frau, Luise Adelgunde Victorie Kulmus in Danzig. Auf Gottscheds Tätigkeit als Theaterreformer verweisen die Anfänge des Briefverkehrs mit dem Ehepaar Neuber.
