Mit Hartmanns von Aue »Erec« beginnt die Geschichte des deutschen Artusromans. Trotz seiner großen Wirkung auf die Epiker seiner Zeit ist der »Erec« nur in einer späten Handschrift, dem für Kaiser Maximilan I. geschriebenen »Ambraser Heldenbuch«, fast vollständig überliefert. Von drei älteren Handschriften existieren Fragmente. Außerdem gibt es Zeugnisse für eine bruchstückhaft erhaltene weitere Version des Erec-Stoffes, die in den 1978 aufgefundenen Wolfenbütteler Fragmenten erhalten sind sowie in den 2003 entdeckten Zwettler Fragmenten, einem der sensationellsten Handschriftenfunde der letzten Jahrzehnte.

Die Neubearbeitung der bewährten wissenschaftlichen Ausgabe bietet eine gründliche Revision des kritischen Textes und Apparates; der Text schließt sich in zahlreichen Fällen wieder enger an die Überlieferung in der Ambraser Handschrift an und kommt damit einer textkritischen Forderung der Forschung nach. Die Einleitung berücksichtigt die aktuellen Forschungsergebnisse zur Überlieferung. Im Anhang werden erstmals zusammen die Fragmente der in den neuen Wolfenbütteler und den Zwettler Fragmenten erhaltenen Version des »Erec« abgedruckt, die unabhängig von der bisher bekannten direkt auf die französische Quelle, den Roman »Erec et Enide« von Chrétien de Troyes, zurückgeht.
