Chapter 1
Kinds of Numbers

You probably use numbers in speech and writing every day. You might tell your neighbor, "I have two sisters." Or maybe you promised your mother that you would do your homework in one hour. Perhaps you wrote down your telephone number for a friend.
Numbers are everywhere. We use numbers to stand for money and height. We even use numbers to tell time. Think of some other ways that we use numbers. Write two of these ways on the lines below.
In this chapter, you will learn about different kinds of numbers.
Even and Odd Numbers
What do the numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 have in common? They are even numbers. Even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8. Look at the number below. Think about whether it is even or odd.
258
Did you answer correctly? The number 258 ends in 8, so it’s an even number.
Odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9. The number 11 is an odd number. The number 327 is also an odd number.
Try this exercise for practice. Look at each of the numbers below.
Circle the even numbers.

How did you do? You should have circled 18, 32, 56, 298, 300, and 478.
Now, let’s try another exercise.
Circle the odd numbers.

The odd numbers are 1, 33, 167, 289, and 321. Did you get them all?
