About this book
The services and resources in The Iona Abbey Worship Book reflect the Iona Community's commitment to the belief that worship is all that we are and all that we do, both inside and outside the church, with no division into the 'sacred' and the 'secular'.

Information
Psalms
This selection of almost fifty psalms covers the gamut of subject matter and emotional range of the Psalter. The translation is not literal, but has resulted from a careful comparison of recent English language translations married to the desire to articulate the texts in language which would be accessible to people who may not be familiar with these icons of Jewish and Christian devotion. They have also been represented in a variety of communal reading styles which, to some extent, reflect the intrinsic diversity of the original poems. Occasionally a long psalm has been shortened in the interests of communal reading.
Whether in public or private, people who read the psalms should not expect that every text will ‘speak for’ or ‘minister to’ them. The Psalms were selected and compiled to enable the people of God to have a comprehensive vocabulary of prayer which encompasses pain and distress as well as joy and faith. These are words which grounded the spirituality of Jesus; and in them – especially in the psalms of lament – we hear the pleas of the war-weary, the oppressed, the doubting, the abused and the poor who are always with us.
In Iona Abbey, the psalms are read Monday to Saturday mornings in a six-week sequence. In addition to these ‘regular’ psalms, a number of others have been included which are more specific to special days in the Christian calendar. This, however, does not preclude any of the psalms from being read either out of sequence or at times other than weekday morning worship.
Below is the six-week sequence and a listing of psalms and their subject matter.
