Da sempre molto ricercata dal collezionismo librario, l'edizione originale di Colonna mobile in Calabria di Horace Rilliet era apparsa a Ginevra, presso la stamperia Pilet & Cougnard, con ogni probabilità nel 1853. Il volume altro non era che una sorta di "diario" che il suo autore aveva composto al seguito di Ferdinando II di Borbone, in viaggio nelle estreme propaggini del suo regno, tra il 27 settembre 1852 e il 30 ottobre seguente. Ne era scaturito un singolare prodotto tipografico, dal formato di un piccolo album di 174 pagine quasi tutte corredate con gustosi disegni di mano dello stesso Rilliet e stampate con tecnica litografica che riproduceva perfettamente il manoscritto originale. Al lettore di oggi gli eventi fondamentali della storia della regione, i suoi paesaggi naturali e architettonici, i"costumi" delle sue popolazioni descritti con mano felice da Rilliet appaiono colti da uno sguardo lieve e disincantato, che restituisce, come già aveva osservato benedetto croce, «il più vivo quadro della Calabria» intorno alla metà del XIX secolo.
