Ma davvero Francesco è un Papa che divide? Potrebbe sembrare una domanda provocatoria, critica. Invece, è come se fosse la fotografia, a cinque anni dagli inizi, del pontificato bergogliano. Per Francesco, bisogna tornare al Vangelo, declinato però nel segno della misericordia, della centralità dei poveri, dell'attenzione alle periferie, anche esistenziali, anche morali. Insomma, una proposta di cambiamento radicale. Che inquieta i cuori, sconvolge mentalità e abitudini, scompagina i centri di potere, provoca resistenze, opposizioni, all'interno della stessa gerarchia ecclesiastica. E finisce, appunto, per dividere il popolo cristiano. C'è gente che non si riconosce nella "Chiesa in uscita" di Bergoglio, nel suo "perdonismo". Si parla di un Papa "eretico", di uno scisma. Sono le inevitabili contraddizioni che caratterizzano il progetto rivoluzionario di papa Bergoglio; e con queste contraddizioni, perciò, è necessario fare i conti. Senza che per questo – e ne è convinto l'autore del libro, con l'esperienza di sessant'anni di frequentazione della storia religiosa e del mondo vaticano – si debba cedere al pessimismo. Il cattolicesimo è in un periodo di transizione molto complesso, molto sofferto. Ma, se vissuto con coraggio e creatività, potrebbe spalancare orizzonti oggi impensabili.
